Pediatric eye care is the branch of ophthalmology that focuses on the eye care needs of children. This includes regular eye exams to detect any vision problems or eye conditions, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of any eye conditions that are found. In some cases, children may need to wear glasses or contact lenses to correct vision problems, while others may need more specialized treatments for conditions such as lazy eye or crossed eyes. It's important for children to have regular eye exams to ensure that their vision is developing properly and to catch any potential problems early on.

There are many different eye conditions that can affect children. Some common conditions include:

  • Refractive errors : These are problems with the way the eye focuses light, resulting in vision that is blurry or distorted. Common refractive errors in children include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
  • Strabismus : This is a condition in which the eyes are not aligned properly, resulting in crossed or misaligned eyes. It can be treated with glasses, patches, or surgery.
  • Amblyopia : This is also known as "lazy eye." It occurs when the brain and the eyes do not work together properly, causing poor vision in one or both eyes. Treatment may include glasses, patches, or eye drops to force the weaker eye to work harder.
  • Conjunctivitis : This is an inflammation of the thin, transparent layer of tissue that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It is often called "pink eye" because the affected eye(s) may appear pink or red. Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies, and can be treated with antibiotics or other medications.

It's important for children to have regular eye exams to detect any potential problems early on. This can help ensure that any necessary treatments are started as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the eyes.

Squint, also known as strabismus, is a condition in which the eyes are not aligned properly, resulting in crossed or misaligned eyes. It can be caused by a number of factors, including problems with the muscles that control the movement of the eyes, a misalignment of the eyes themselves, or problems with the way the brain processes visual information. Squint can cause vision problems, such as double vision or difficulty with depth perception, and can also affect a person's appearance. Treatment may include glasses, patches, or surgery to align the eyes properly. It's important for children with squint to receive treatment as early as possible to prevent further vision problems.
